       Hal  R. Smith Trophy

The annual Trans-Canada Telephone Employees' Curling Association Championship
will hopefully provide participants with good curling, good times and good friends.

Perhaps, one of the more tangible things about the event is the awarding of the
Hal R. Smith Trophy, named after the man who was instrumental in founding
the event.

The Trophy's history dates back to its selection by T.C.T.E.C.A. delegates Murray Brown
and Gary Hobson of Manitoba, to its purchase in 1966 and its subsequent win by the
Duane Wolfe foursome from Alberta. It was not, however, until the Executive meeting
at the 1968 Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan that the decision was made to
give the Trophy its present name, "The Hal R. Smith Trophy".

"In recognition of the immediate past President's contribution to the formation and development of the Association"

Hal R. Smith, who retired from SaskTel's accounting department, organized
the first meeting of the Trans-Canada Telephone Employees' Curling
Association in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1963.

Since then, Hal has been President of the T.C.T.E.C.A. for four years and
Secretary-Treasurer for ten years.

The large size and weight of the original Trophy posed shipping challenges,
so in 1979 a new trophy was purchased and all previous winners names were
transferred to the current Hal R.Smith Trophy.
